Our Story
The facility broke ground in 2006, in Atkinson, NE. It began producing ethanol and distillers grains in December 2008 but did not commence full production until June 2009. Since 2009, it has been producing Ethanol and feed products adding corn oil to the list in March of 2014. Through various improvements we’ve continuously provided quality products and superior customer service to our local farmers and ranchers over the years. The plant works to make advancements to ensure that we are a leading supplier.
In 2023 Husker Ag LLC and its partners made an investment to form the new Sandhills Energy Company. Husker Ag along with Lincolnway Energy LLC of Nevada Iowa are helping to transform the company into a new age, highly efficient, low carbon producer of ethanol fuels, focusing on industry leading yields and by adapting a unique arrangement of technologies to dramatically lower the amount of raw energy and water that traditional ethanol plants operate with thus producing some of the lowest carbon intense gallons in the industry. One of our projects is described below.
Sandhills installed ICM’s Project 10 (P10TM) distillation upgrade in 2024. The upgrade involves placing the Beer Column under vacuum, fully recovering all the heat from the 200P alcohol vapors, and heat integrating evaporation with the Beer Column. The project is expected to reduce both natural gas and electricity usage by 20-25%. Together with production of only Modified Wet Distillers Grains (MWDGS), the P10 project will make Sandhills a low CI fuel ethanol producer.

Sandhills Renewable Energy is a producer of low carbon renewable energy with a hard work, can do philosophy, that is prevalent in the Sandhills region. Leveraging over 60 years of combined operational knowledge between Husker Ag, Lincolnway Energy and the newly formed Sandhills Energy, we are working together to ensure a successful company that perfectly supports the agriculture economy in the area, while also providing a profitable return for our investors and the community.
